Structures

I’m installing my first one-man show this week at the Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery. It’s called ‘Structures‘. Don’t miss the opening, this Friday, from 6:30 to 9:30. Directions are here.

Here’s the image from the postcard and the statement…

Starting with the essential functional elements of familiar forms, I try to refine and recreate them in original, simple and meaningful, structures. This approach sometimes adds complexity, other times it simplifies things. But in all cases, the process of dissection and restructuring is revealing to me. It leads me to think about those qualities most inherent to common forms, qualities that as often as not go unquestioned or are taken for granted. It is a designer’s approach, as opposed to an aesthetician’s. Beauty is as important to me as any other element of a design, but the beauty I’m after is spare. It’s the thing itself in the economy of its form, not an elaboration.

Joseph’s kiln opening

My friend, Joseph Sand, who apprenticed with me at Mark Hewitt’s, is having his first kiln opening this weekend. Joseph is a talented potter, and there’s bound to be a lot of great work for sale. I’d encourage you to go.

Saturday, August 21st, 9AM – 5PM
Sunday, August 22nd, 12PM-5PM

Directions are on his website.

Mothra!

Okay, so I’m a name-dropper, but when an international celebrity takes a shining to your work, you mention it.

She’s very nice in person, by the way – not a diva like you might expect. But not all that talkative, either. And it might be rude to bring up, but she has sort of let herself go since her film career. I’m not saying she’s fat or anything, just umm… well, I’ve heard Godzilla’s gotten really into yoga lately – maybe she could try joining him for a morning session or two and see how she likes it.

Studio visit

Potter Tracey Broome featured a visit to my studio in her award winning blog. See it here. Thanks Tracey, Kristin, and Charlotte for coming out.

Epic sale

What a sale! Pots were flying everywhere. Afterwards, Ronan and I lit cigars with hundred dollar bills and hired Bill Shatner to dance for us.

Thanks to everyone who came and to Teresa, Christy, and Nancy for helping out. Thanks also to 3CUPS for providing coffee – they brewed freshly ground Finca Nueva Armenia in press-pots just for the event – wow! Thanks especially to Ronan for inviting me to be a part of it. I had a great time.
